Floor lamp

Information

This rare Swedish floor lamp from the 1950s is a striking example of the refined elegance characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. The lamp features an upward-facing, bowl-shaped uplighter made of solid brass, finished in a warm, muted golden tone. The surface of the shade is delicately perforated with a constellation of small holes, creating a subtle decorative light pattern when illuminated. These perforations not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also contribute to a softer diffusion of light, producing a gentle, ambient glow that reflects off the surrounding walls.

The brass bowl is supported by a sculptural collar composed of vertically looped brass elements, which adds a restrained ornamental touch to the design. This transition from the shade to the slender cylindrical shaft is wrapped in natural brown leather, introducing a tactile contrast and visual warmth to the piece. The leather-wrapped column then connects to a circular base, which mirrors the warm tone of the shade, ensuring a sense of material and visual continuity throughout the lamp’s form.

Standing at a total height of 170 cm (66.9 inches) with a shade diameter of 40 cm (15.7 inches), the lamp features an upright, torchère design, which makes it an uplighter suited for providing ambient light. The light is reflected off the ceiling, creating a soft, indirect illumination ideal for a variety of interior settings.

Although the designer remains unknown, the craftsmanship and stylistic details—such as the harmonious material combination, decorative perforations, and use of natural leather—suggest the work of a high-end Scandinavian workshop or lighting manufacturer from the postwar modernist era. The design embodies the principles of simplicity, material honesty, and functional beauty that were central to mid-century modern Scandinavian design.

The lamp is in very good vintage condition, with light wear consistent with its age and use. The brass has developed a soft, aged patina, and the leather surface shows only minor signs of handling, which adds to the authenticity and historical character of this exceptional piece.
