Hans-Agne Jakobsson table lamps
This rare pair of table lamps, model B-195, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. Each lamp features a cylindrical brass shade made of two connected segments with a subtle step between them. The adjustable shades are mounted on slender vertical rods rising from flat circular brass bases. The undersides of the shades are finished in black to reduce glare and direct light downward. These lamps exhibit a sculptural yet utilitarian form, embodying the functionalist and minimalist principles of Scandinavian mid-century design.
Crafted from solid brass, the lamps possess a warm golden tone that has developed a delicate patina with age. The condition is very good, showing minor surface wear consistent with vintage use. Perforations at the tops of the shades contribute both to ventilation and aesthetic detail. The lamps accommodate standard bulbs and retain their original white cords.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a renowned Swedish designer noted for his innovative lighting solutions. With a background as a carpenter and architect, he worked for Carl Malmsten and General Motors before establishing his own lighting company in 1951. Jakobsson’s designs are celebrated for their emphasis on indirect, atmospheric lighting and the harmonious blend of industrial materials with organic forms.
The B-195 model exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, combining precise craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics. It reflects Jakobsson’s characteristic use of metal and geometry to manipulate light both functionally and expressively.
Each lamp measures 10 centimeters in width, 26 centimeters in depth, and 56 centimeters in height (approximately 3.9 x 10.2 x 22 inches).
