Hans Bergström floor lamp
This floor lamp, model 544, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1950s. It represents a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design, combining warm-toned natural materials with minimal, architectural lines. The lamp is constructed from solid teak and brass, materials frequently employed by Bergström for their tactile and visual qualities.
The lamp features a slim, upright teak shaft with a warm brown grain, rising vertically from a narrow circular base. A slender brass arm extends horizontally from the upper section of the shaft, terminating in a lightly conical lamp head. The brass elements retain a matte golden tone, consistent with gentle aging and oxidation. The simplicity of the structural geometry is characteristic of Scandinavian design during the post-war period, prioritizing clarity of form and honest material expression.
The proportions of the lamp are balanced and compact, measuring 13 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 136 cm in height. These correspond approximately to 5.1 inches wide, 15.7 inches deep, and 53.5 inches high. Its scale makes it suitable for reading corners, seating areas, or as accent lighting in refined interiors.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) trained at Konstfack in Stockholm and founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. His work helped define Swedish lighting aesthetics in the mid-20th century, characterized by an emphasis on functional elegance, carefully chosen materials, and soft illumination. Model 544 reflects his approach, with its combination of teak and brass and a clear attention to proportion and usability.
The lamp is in very good vintage condition, with surface wear consistent with age. The teak remains structurally sound with only minor abrasions, and the brass shows light patination without corrosion. The shade is not present in this example and may originally have been of pleated textile or parchment in a soft conical form, consistent with other Bergström designs of the period.
This is a rare and well-preserved example of Hans Bergström’s work from the 1950s, demonstrating the refined craftsmanship and material sensitivity that characterized Swedish lighting design in the mid-century era.
