Hans Bergström table lamp
This table lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, characterized by a harmonious balance between functional form and refined material choices. The lamp combines a perforated brass shade with a fluted teak stem, mounted on a circular brass base, giving the piece both visual warmth and structural solidity.
The lamp features a dome-shaped brass shade with evenly spaced perforations along the rim, allowing diffused light to escape and creating a soft, ambient glow. The brass has developed a natural patina over time, adding depth and authenticity to the surface. The turned teak stem is vertically fluted, providing tactile contrast against the smooth metallic components, and is joined seamlessly to the brass socket holder and base. The on-off switch is discreetly positioned on the base.
Hans Bergström, founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was among Sweden’s most influential lighting designers, known for his meticulous craftsmanship and exploration of materials. His designs for ASEA during the postwar period combined industrial precision with domestic elegance, reflecting the broader Scandinavian design ethos of the era. ASEA, a major Swedish electrical manufacturer, produced a range of lighting fixtures that married engineering excellence with design sensibility, collaborating with leading designers of the mid-20th century.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use consistent with its period, including minor surface wear and patina to the brass. The original proportions and finishes have been preserved, maintaining the lamp’s authentic mid-century character.
