Poul Kjærholm table
This rare academy table was designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers in Denmark during the 1950s. The table features a black lacquered steel frame supporting a pinewood top that highlights a pronounced grain pattern. The minimalist construction exemplifies Kjærholm’s signature balance between industrial materials and organic elements, reflecting his refined approach to modernist design.
Poul Kjærholm was renowned for his innovative use of steel combined with natural materials, creating furniture with sculptural yet functional qualities. Unlike many contemporaries who focused primarily on wood, Kjærholm treated metal with the same level of craftsmanship traditionally reserved for timber. His work is characterized by precision, structural clarity, and understated elegance.
The black steel frame is constructed with clean, straight lines, offering a lightweight yet sturdy presence. The warm pinewood top provides a natural contrast, showcasing a rich patina and distinctive grain. Designed for academic or professional environments, the table embodies a utilitarian aesthetic while maintaining a strong, refined design identity.
Measuring 141 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 68 cm in height (55.5 x 33.5 x 26.8 inches), the table is in well-preserved vintage condition. It shows visible signs of age on the wood surface and slight wear on the metal frame, consistent with its period use. This piece stands as a significant example of Kjærholm’s early work and his collaboration with Rud. Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most esteemed cabinetmakers.
