Ceiling lamps
This pair of ceiling lamps, produced in Sweden during the 1960s, embodies the Scandinavian mid-century lighting design ethos, which emphasizes diffused illumination, geometric clarity, and the integration of mixed materials. The design centers around a shallow, dome-shaped shade crafted from spun copper with a warm, reflective surface. This copper element is paired with a white opaline glass top and a lower diffuser made from molded plastic featuring concentric rings. The layering of materials serves both optical and functional purposes, effectively dispersing light downward while reducing glare.
The copper dome is smoothly curved, featuring a brushed finish that exhibits a rich, natural patina and a warm reddish hue. The surface shows light oxidation and minor irregularities, typical of age and adding to the authentic mid-century character. The opaline glass element is set flush into the copper housing at the uppermost section, softening the emitted light and blending seamlessly with the overall design.
Beneath the copper dome, the molded plastic diffuser is arranged in stepped concentric rings, serving as a glare-reducing baffle and providing a graphic visual detail. This internal structure diffuses the light evenly, producing an efficient and atmospheric glow. This approach aligns with broader trends in Scandinavian lighting design during the period, where layered forms and functionalist lighting solutions were frequently explored, as seen in designs from prominent Swedish producers like Ateljé Lyktan and Stilarmatur Tranås.
Although the designer remains unidentified, the proportions and material choices are consistent with Swedish lighting designs of the era that experimented with industrial and decorative elements. The label “MADE IN SWEDEN” is present at the top of the fixture, confirming its origin.
The lamps are in good vintage condition, with even aging and surface wear on the copper elements, minor signs of use to the diffuser rings, and the opaline glass intact.
Each lamp measures 45 cm in diameter and 24 cm in height, with a total drop length of 120 cm (approximately 17.72 inches in diameter, 9.45 inches in height, and a total drop of 47.24 inches).
