Information

This rare file cabinet, attributed to Arne Vodder and produced by Vamo Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s, embodies the functional minimalism and refined detailing characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian office and institutional furniture. The cabinet is crafted in oak with a contrasting teak plinth base, reflecting the Danish tradition of pairing complementary native hardwoods.

The design features a grid of twenty-three open compartments arranged in three vertical columns, with adjustable and removable horizontal dividers to accommodate flat storage of documents, prints, or other paper materials. The shelves are finely chamfered at the front edges, enhancing the piece’s precision and visual lightness. The oak surfaces present a warm golden tone with straight, uniform grain, while the darker reddish-brown teak base adds subtle figuring and anchors the cabinet both visually and structurally.

Construction details include precise joinery at the intersections of vertical and horizontal elements, thin-edge shelving, and a robust frame engineered for long-term durability. The cabinet bears the original Vamo Sønderborg stamp along with the “SKM” mark, indicating it was likely commissioned for a state or institutional setting.

Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was a leading figure in Danish postwar design, known for elegant, practical furniture suited to both domestic and professional environments. While best recognized for sideboards, desks, and seating, Vodder’s design principles extended to storage furniture that balances proportion, material quality, and subtle architectural form. Vamo Sønderborg was a respected Danish manufacturer closely associated with Vodder, celebrated for its craftsmanship in veneered and solid wood pieces.

This cabinet is in very good vintage condition, showing light wear consistent with age and use. The wood surfaces have developed a warm patina, especially on the shelving.

The dimensions measure 90 cm wide, 46 cm deep, and 75 cm high (approximately 35.4 by 18.1 by 29.5 inches).
