Illum Wikkelsø sofa
This very rare sofa, model Croissant, was designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Holger Christiansen in Denmark during the 1950s. Executed in rosewood and upholstered in light beige leather, the piece exemplifies Wikkelsø’s signature approach to form—organic, sculptural, and rooted in both comfort and visual softness. The sofa’s name refers to its distinctive, rounded silhouette with segmented upholstery that curves outward like the folds of a croissant, creating a voluminous yet balanced appearance.
The frame is constructed in solid rosewood with a deep, warm tone that contrasts elegantly with the pale leather. The gently arched base and legs provide structural integrity while elevating the upholstered body to give it an appearance of lightness despite its substantial form. The craftsmanship is of the highest quality, reflecting the Danish tradition of precision joinery and material harmony. The original leather has developed a subtle patina, enhancing its natural texture and depth without compromising its supple quality.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was one of Denmark’s most expressive mid-century designers, known for combining sculptural aesthetics with ergonomic design. Trained as a cabinetmaker and educated at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, Wikkelsø emphasized the organic potential of natural materials. His designs often embody a distinctive softness and fluidity while maintaining clear structural logic—qualities evident in the Croissant model, which remains one of his most iconic and sought-after works.
Produced by Holger Christiansen, a manufacturer known for its close collaborations with leading Danish designers, the sofa reflects the craftsmanship and design philosophy that defined Scandinavian modernism—an emphasis on form following function, paired with tactile materials and timeless proportions.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of use and a refined patina consistent with age. The structure is sturdy, and the leather has aged gracefully, preserving both comfort and aesthetic integrity.
