Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen dining chairs
This set of six dining chairs, model 195, designed by Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen and produced by France & Son in Denmark in 1957, represents an iconic example of Danish modern design. Each chair is crafted in teak with precision joinery, including distinctive finger-jointed details at the top rail, emphasizing the craftsmanship and structural integrity typical of Gjerløv-Knudsen’s work. The curved backrest is gently rounded and supported by three vertical posts, creating a geometric yet inviting form that balances function and aesthetics.
The seats have been newly reupholstered in a wool fabric in a soft, textured neutral tone, complementing the warm patina of the teak wood. The upholstery is carefully fitted, maintaining the clean lines and low profile that characterize the model. These chairs remain in good vintage condition with minor signs of usage, consistent with age, and display a well-preserved surface with a rich, even tone in the wood.
Produced during the height of the mid-century Scandinavian movement, model 195 embodies the period’s focus on simplicity, high-quality materials, and ergonomic comfort. With their compact dimensions (54 x 44 x 70 cm, seat height 46 cm), these chairs are suitable for both dining and meeting settings, offering versatility while retaining their strong architectural presence. This rare set of six is an excellent representation of Danish modern seating design from the late 1950s.
