Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen dining table
This is a rare and versatile drop-leaf dining table designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Son in Denmark during the 1950s. The table is crafted in solid and veneered teak, showcasing a warm, medium-brown tone with a fine grain pattern characteristic of quality Danish teak. The surface presents a soft satin finish, and the piece has been completely restored, preserving the natural depth and glow of the wood while maintaining its original integrity. The legs and frame have sculptural qualities, with subtle curves and rounded edges that soften the geometry of the piece.
The table features a distinctive drop-leaf construction, with two large semi-circular leaves supported by gatefold legs that swing outward to form a stable base when fully extended. This allows the table to function both as a compact console when folded and as a generous dining table when open. Brass hinges and fittings add a subtle decorative detail while ensuring durability and smooth operation. The design demonstrates the designers’ focus on functionality combined with refined craftsmanship, a hallmark of Danish modernism.
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were leading figures of mid-century Danish design, known for their innovative approach to furniture that was both practical and elegant. Their collaboration with France & Son resulted in a number of iconic designs that exemplified the lightness, modularity, and organic aesthetics that defined the era. France & Son was one of Denmark’s most respected manufacturers, working closely with many of the country’s leading designers to produce furniture of exceptional quality, often for both domestic and international markets.
This table represents the mid-century Scandinavian style at its most versatile, with a design that balances functionality and sculptural presence. Its ability to serve as both a space-saving console and a full dining surface makes it ideal for flexible interiors. The restoration ensures that the table is in very good vintage condition, with only minimal traces of age consistent with careful use.
