Information

This pair of vases, model Orchid, was designed by Timo Sarpaneva and produced by Iittala in Finland in 1956. Each piece is executed in clear glass with a distinct sculptural quality, characterized by an elongated, organic form with a central recessed sphere. The design reflects Sarpaneva’s fascination with pure, fluid shapes and his ability to transform functional objects into works of art through glass.

Timo Sarpaneva, one of Finland’s most influential postwar designers, was internationally recognized for his glass art, textiles, and industrial design. His collaboration with Iittala during the 1950s and 1960s resulted in some of the company’s most iconic designs, many of which won awards and helped establish Finland’s reputation for modern design. The Orchid vase exemplifies his exploration of glass as both material and form, balancing simplicity with complex inner detailing.

Produced by Iittala, a leading Finnish glass manufacturer founded in 1881, the Orchid vases are part of a long tradition of Scandinavian mid-century glass design. Iittala became known for collaborating with leading designers such as Sarpaneva, Tapio Wirkkala, and Kaj Franck, creating pieces that merged artistry with function.

The vases are in good vintage condition with small signs of usage consistent with age. They display well and retain their clarity, with minor wear on the base.

Each vase measures 9 cm in diameter and 28 cm in height (3.5 x 11 inches).
