Louis Kalff table lamp
This rare table lamp was designed by Louis Kalff and produced by Philips in Germany during the 1950s. The lamp features a sculptural form emblematic of mid-century modern design, combining lacquered metal, brass, and molded plastic. Its structure includes an angular brass stem rising from a tripod-shaped base, partially finished with textured metal, adding visual interest and stability. The shade is made of bright yellow molded plastic, shaped with organic curves reminiscent of a folded petal or visor. It is secured atop the lamp by two small brass fittings, integrating both form and function.
Louis Kalff, a Dutch designer, played a pivotal role as Philips’ industrial design director, shaping the company’s aesthetic identity during the mid-20th century. His work balanced futuristic elegance with practical simplicity, helping define Philips’ modernist design language. Philips itself, founded in 1891, emerged as a leading manufacturer of lighting and electronics, pioneering innovative designs that blended technology with style.
This lamp reflects the space-age and atomic design influences characteristic of the 1950s, emphasizing dynamic, fluid shapes and bold color choices. It remains in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with age.
The dimensions are approximately 11 cm wide, 19 cm deep, and 22.5 cm high (4.3 x 7.5 x 8.9 inches).
