Edward Hald attrib. ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, attributed to Edward Hald and produced by Orrefors in Sweden during the 1930s, is a refined example of Scandinavian Art Deco glass design. The shade is made of Havana-colored glass with intricate cut and engraved decoration, featuring stylized leaf and geometric motifs. The surface has been acid-treated to achieve a matte texture that diffuses light softly while emphasizing the precision of the engraving.
The conical shade transitions from a lighter amber tone at the rim to a deeper hue at the base, enhancing the depth and warmth of the illumination. The glass is mounted to a bronze-patinated brass fitting with a circular finial, complementing the amber color of the shade with a dark metallic contrast. The lamp’s composition balances decorative richness with structural simplicity, a hallmark of Orrefors’ craftsmanship during the interwar period.
Edward Hald (1883–1980) was among Sweden’s leading glass artists, known for his pioneering work in engraved and sculptural glass at Orrefors. His designs combined artistic detail with functional clarity, establishing a visual language that defined Swedish glassmaking of the early 20th century.
This example is in good vintage condition with small nicks and signs of age consistent with its period. The patina on the brass components and the subtle wear on the glass surface contribute to its authenticity and historical character.
