Alvar Aalto ceiling lamps
This rare set of six ceiling lamps, model A111, designed by Alvar Aalto and produced by Valaistustyö in Finland during the 1950s, is a distinguished example of Scandinavian modernist lighting design. Each lamp combines a cylindrical white lacquered metal upper section with a lower brass element composed of slender vertical rods arranged in a circular formation. This design allows light to filter softly through the gaps, producing an ambient glow while directing a focused illumination downward.
The A111 model reflects Aalto’s signature design philosophy, balancing functional lighting with an atmospheric quality that enhances interior spaces. The interplay between the smooth white metal and the warm, textured brass emphasizes an organic yet refined aesthetic, characteristic of Aalto’s holistic approach to design.
Alvar Aalto, a seminal Finnish architect and designer, was renowned for integrating architecture, furniture, and lighting into cohesive environments. His collaboration with Valaistustyö, a respected Finnish lighting manufacturer, resulted in iconic mid-century pieces like this set, which remain highly collectible and celebrated.
Each lamp measures 18 cm (7.1 inches) in diameter and 48 cm (18.9 inches) in height, with an overall suspension length of 120 cm (47.2 inches). The lamps are in good vintage condition, showing natural patina on the brass and minor wear consistent with their age.
