Johannes Andersen bar

This rare bar cabinet, model SK661, was designed by Danish designer Johannes Andersen in 1958 and produced by J. Skaaning & Søn in Denmark. Constructed from richly grained rosewood with brass fittings and glass interior elements, the piece embodies Andersen’s refined and decorative modernism, combining geometric clarity with organic detailing.

The cabinet has a rectilinear shape with slightly tapered side panels, characteristic of high-quality Danish cabinetmaking from the late 1950s. The upper section opens with a hinged lid, revealing a mirrored and glass-lined bar compartment. Inside, the compartment is equipped with integrated glass shelves supported by vertical brass rods and circular bottle holders embedded in rosewood. The interior is finished with black laminate and reflective surfaces, emphasizing both functionality and elegance. Below, the front panel drops open to reveal storage compartments with drawers and shelving. Additionally, the base includes a hinged door for further concealed storage.

Johannes Andersen (1903–1991) was known for his refined approach to Scandinavian modern design, often merging functional forms with sculptural elegance. His work, which includes furniture ranging from coffee tables to cabinets, is recognized for its graceful proportions and high-quality craftsmanship. J. Skaaning & Søn, a lesser-known Danish manufacturer, collaborated with Andersen on select high-quality custom pieces and small-batch production.

This cabinet is a remarkable example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship, blending functional furniture design with decorative artistry.

The dimensions of the cabinet are 115 cm wide, 41 cm deep, and 112 cm high, which translates to approximately 45.3 inches in width, 16.1 inches in depth, and 44.1 inches in height. The condition is very good, showing only minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.
