Poul Kjærholm easy chairs
This pair of easy chairs, model PK22, was designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark in 1955. The PK22 is among Kjærholm’s most recognized works and exemplifies his pursuit of minimalist structure combined with noble materials, resulting in a form that is both architectural and refined.
Each chair features a low, splayed frame constructed in flat-brushed stainless steel. The profile is characterized by geometric precision and visual lightness, with legs that taper into a gently angled stance and terminate in flattened feet, ensuring both stability and formal elegance. The seamless joinery and exposed fastenings are deliberate and characteristic of Kjærholm’s honest treatment of material and construction.
The seat and backrest are made from natural woven rattan stretched across the frame in a single continuous surface. The rattan exhibits warm honey tones and fine handwoven detailing that contrast with the cool metallic sheen of the frame. The curvature of the seat is subtly contoured to accommodate the sitter, and the design achieves comfort without upholstery, relying instead on the organic flexibility of the material.
Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) was a Danish designer trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. His work is notable for its refined aesthetics, precise detailing, and integration of industrial materials, particularly steel, which he treated with the same reverence traditionally reserved for wood. The PK22 won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957 and remains a landmark of Scandinavian modernism.
E. Kold Christensen, the original producer of Kjærholm’s furniture before production was transferred to Fritz Hansen, was instrumental in realizing the early editions of his designs. Pieces produced by Kold Christensen are particularly sought after due to their historical authenticity and subtle manufacturing differences.
This pair is in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and use consistent with their period. The rattan has developed a desirable patina with areas of darkening and minor wear, while the steel frames show small scuffs and oxidation marks, especially near the feet, adding character and evidence of honest aging.
