Information

This is a rare and refined set of eight high-backed dining chairs designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Uldum Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. These chairs exemplify the height of Scandinavian modernism, merging fine joinery, organic form, and elegant restraint.

Each chair is constructed in solid rosewood, characterized by a rich, dark grain and a smooth, satin finish. The frame displays an elegantly curved silhouette with a slightly concave backrest composed of multiple slender vertical spindles, tapering at both ends. The crest rail is subtly shaped for upper back support and transitions seamlessly into the vertical members. The seat features a floating effect, resting lightly within the frame. It has been newly reupholstered in a vibrant blue wool textile with a finely woven texture, introducing contrast and modern color while remaining sensitive to the original design intent.

The proportions are refined and well-balanced, emphasizing comfort without compromising visual lightness. The rear legs are subtly splayed and integrated into the flow of the backrest, reinforcing the chair’s sculptural quality and ergonomic sophistication. The high back provides extended support and enhances the vertical rhythm in a dining setting.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a prominent figure in Danish modern design and was widely appreciated for his work that bridged architectural sensibilities and cabinetmaking traditions. His collaboration with Uldum Møbelfabrik produced some of the most recognized and collectible mid-century Danish seating pieces. Uldum Møbelfabrik was known for its high level of craftsmanship and careful selection of woods, contributing to the long-term durability and aesthetic appeal of its furniture.

These chairs were retailed by Illums Bolighus, a major design institution in Copenhagen that championed modern Scandinavian design throughout the 20th century.

The dimensions of each chair are 49.5 cm wide, 54 cm deep, and 97 cm high, with a seat height of 44 cm, corresponding to approximately 19.5 inches in width, 21.3 inches in depth, 38.2 inches in height, and 17.3 inches in seat height. The set is in excellent condition, with newly upholstered seats and lightly aged but well-preserved rosewood frames.
