Information

This very rare side table or bureau was designed and produced by Frits Henningsen in Denmark during the 1930s. The piece reflects Henningsen’s distinctive approach to furniture design, where classical cabinetmaking traditions are combined with restrained modern proportions and an emphasis on refined detailing. As both designer and producer, Henningsen maintained strict control over materials and craftsmanship, resulting in furniture of exceptional quality and consistency.

The construction is executed in solid mahogany, displaying a deep reddish-brown tone with fine, even grain and subtle natural variation across the surfaces. The case is composed as a compact rectangular volume elevated on a slender stand with tapered legs connected by stretchers, giving the piece a light and architectural presence. The front features four drawers with gently curved brass handles, carefully proportioned and symmetrically aligned. A small brass key escutcheon on the side indicates the presence of a locking mechanism, adding a discreet functional detail without disturbing the overall visual balance.

The mahogany surfaces have been carefully restored, retaining the character of the wood while presenting a consistent and refined finish. The brass elements have a warm, muted tone that complements the wood and aligns with the understated elegance typical of Henningsen’s work. The combination of materials and proportions places the piece firmly within the Scandinavian interpretation of mid-century design, while still rooted in earlier neoclassical and Arts and Crafts influences.

The table is in good vintage condition and has been completely restored. The restoration work has preserved the integrity of the original construction while ensuring stability and usability. Minor traces of age may remain, consistent with the object’s history, but no significant defects are present.

The dimensions are 60 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 23.6 x 15.7 x 31.5 inches.
