Axel Einar Hjorth bookcase
This rare bookcase, model Oh Boy, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden in 1929. The piece represents one of Hjorth’s most distinctive early designs, created during his tenure as chief designer at NK, where he was instrumental in shaping the company’s transition from classic revival styles to modernist and functionalist furniture.
The bookcase is crafted in birch with a striking two-tone composition. The vertical structure is stained a deep brown-black, contrasting with the natural honey-colored finish of the shelves and base. This juxtaposition emphasizes the geometric clarity and architectural balance that define Hjorth’s work from this period. The structure rests on a solid plinth, providing stability and grounding the composition, while the precisely mounted open shelves give a light and linear rhythm to the design.
The original brass manufacturer’s plate is mounted on the reverse, inscribed “AB Nordiska Kompaniet” along with the serial number confirming its provenance and early production. The piece retains its original finish with a rich, aged patina that highlights the natural grain of the birch veneer and subtle wear consistent with careful use.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was among Sweden’s most significant furniture designers of the 20th century. His early works for Nordiska Kompaniet combined the decorative refinement of the Swedish Grace movement with the emerging functionalist ideals of the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Oh Boy model exemplifies this synthesis—elegant in proportion, minimal in ornamentation, and precise in execution. Hjorth’s furniture from this era is now recognized for its pioneering role in Scandinavian modernism.
