Axel Einar Hjorth attrib. sofa
This very rare three-seat sofa is attributed to Swedish designer Axel Einar Hjorth and was produced by Nordiska Kompaniet during the 1930s. The design reflects Hjorth’s early modernist work, which often blended vernacular traditions with modern functionalism. This is evident in the sofa’s robust geometric form and the exposed joinery characteristic of Hjorth’s pieces from this period.
The frame is crafted from solid pine, showcasing a warm amber hue with expressive grain and natural textural variations. The side panels are thick and flat with softly rounded vertical edges, joined to the base through visible wooden dowels. The overall silhouette is low, wide, and rectilinear, softened by the natural warmth of the wood and refined detailing. The construction is straightforward but precise, demonstrating traditional woodworking techniques throughout.
The upholstery has been recently renewed in an off-white bouclé fabric, creating a tactile contrast with the pine frame. The seating area features a single firm cushion, while the backrest consists of three generously filled, removable cushions upholstered in a neutral tone that complements the Scandinavian aesthetic. This restoration respects the original form’s integrity while providing updated comfort and durability.
Axel Einar Hjorth served as head of design at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938, and his work during this period helped shape Swedish modernism.
The sofa measures 220 centimeters (86.6 inches) in width, 85 centimeters (33.5 inches) in depth, and 79 centimeters (31.1 inches) in height, with a seat height of 40 centimeters (15.7 inches). It is in excellent structural condition, featuring newly restored upholstery and minor age-related wear on the wooden frame consistent with its vintage character.
