Gunnar Nylund bowl
This ceramic bowl was designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. The form is simple yet refined, with a gently flaring conical profile resting on a narrow circular foot, a shape characteristic of Nylund’s elegant and functional design language.
The glaze is a deep blue-green with a subtle variegated surface, shifting from darker tones at the lower part of the bowl toward slightly lighter and warmer hues near the rim. The rim itself shows a thin brown edge, giving definition to the piece. Inside, the glaze pools with tonal variation, forming a natural gradient that accentuates depth and texture.
Gunnar Nylund, one of Rörstrand’s most prolific designers, was celebrated for his mastery of stoneware and for developing innovative glazing techniques. His works often combine simplicity of form with complex, nuanced surfaces, making them both functional and artistic. This bowl exemplifies the mid-century Swedish ceramic tradition, where refined craftsmanship and modern aesthetics meet.
The bowl is in good condition, showing only minor signs of use consistent with age. It remains a fine example of Scandinavian mid-century studio ceramics.
