Jacob Ängman vase
This rare Art Deco vase was designed by Jacob Ängman and produced by GAB (Guldsmedsaktiebolaget) in Sweden. The piece is executed in solid bronze and has a distinctly sculptural profile, with a generously rounded, bulbous body that rises into a tall, narrow neck and a slightly flared mouth. The proportions are carefully balanced, combining a soft, organic swelling at the base with a sharply defined vertical lift toward the opening, giving the vase a quiet but architectural presence.
The surface shows a deep bronze tonality with variations ranging from warm brown to darker, almost greenish-black areas where the patina has developed over time. Around the upper rim the vase is finished with fine linear banding, adding a restrained decorative detail that emphasizes the geometry of the mouth. The material quality is substantial, and the vase has a notably heavy weight, consistent with dense cast bronze production and the robust metalwork associated with Swedish decorative arts of the period.
Jacob Ängman is known for his work in Swedish metal design during the early 20th century, where classical shaping and modernist simplification were combined within the Art Deco vocabulary. His designs often rely on strong silhouettes, refined surface treatment, and an emphasis on proportion rather than applied ornament. The vase was produced by GAB, one of Sweden’s most important manufacturers of high-quality metalwork, recognized for producing silver and bronze objects with a high level of technical control and consistent finishing standards.
The vase is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use, including surface wear and an evenly developed patina typical for untreated bronze. It measures 11 cm in diameter and 24 cm in height (approximately 4.3 inches in diameter and 9.4 inches in height).
