Josef Frank floor lamps
This rare pair of height-adjustable floor lamps, model 1842, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamps combine refined proportions with a highly functional construction, characteristic of Frank’s approach where practical modern living was paired with understated elegance and carefully balanced detail.
Each lamp is constructed with a slender vertical brass stem finished with the original green lacquered surface, creating a strong contrast between the deep muted green tone and the warm brass components. The base is formed with three curved legs, giving the lamps a stable tripod structure while maintaining a light and open appearance. Small brass ball feet terminate each leg, adding a subtle decorative accent while also emphasizing the precision of the metalwork.
The lamp heads are fitted with conical shades, newly made, in a crisp white fabric that gives a clean diffused light. The brass fittings and joints show a naturally aged surface with visible patina, consistent with mid-century brass objects. The arms are designed with an offset geometry, allowing the shade to project outward while maintaining a balanced silhouette. The vertical construction allows for height adjustment, making the lamps suitable both as reading lights and as general ambient lighting.
Josef Frank was one of the most influential figures in Swedish interior design of the 20th century, originally trained as an architect in Vienna before relocating to Sweden. His work is closely associated with Svenskt Tenn, where he introduced a distinct design philosophy that merged modernism with warmth, comfort, and a humanistic sense of scale. While Frank is widely recognized for his textile and pattern designs, his lighting and furniture designs demonstrate the same sensitivity to proportion and everyday use, often incorporating elegant but restrained technical solutions.
Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924, remains one of Sweden’s most significant design firms, known for producing high-quality furniture, lighting, and interior objects. During the mid-century period the company became particularly associated with Josef Frank’s work, producing pieces that combined skilled craftsmanship with modern Scandinavian refinement. Model 1842 is a strong example of Svenskt Tenn’s ability to translate Frank’s architectural thinking into functional lighting design.
The lamps are in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. The lacquered surfaces show small signs of handling and light wear, while the brass components display natural patina and minor surface marks. The lamps have been newly rewired, making them suitable for contemporary use, and are fitted with new shades.
