Information

The Skoga sofa is a rare model designed by Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), Stockholm, and produced in 1932 as part of the celebrated Sportstugemöbler collection. Executed in stained pine, the sofa exemplifies Hjorth’s distinctive interpretation of Swedish vernacular craftsmanship, combining robust construction with a refined architectural composition. The design features broad, tapered supports, rounded armrests, a gently curved backrest, and a slatted seat resting on cylindrical stretchers, all assembled with exposed through-tenon joinery that emphasizes both structural integrity and decorative expression. The dark brown stained finish enhances the natural grain and texture of the pine while reinforcing the rustic character intended for the collection.

The Sportstugemöbler series was introduced by Nordiska Kompaniet during the early 1930s as a response to the growing popularity of Swedish holiday homes and country retreats. Rather than embracing the functionalist aesthetic that dominated contemporary design, Hjorth drew inspiration from traditional Scandinavian building techniques and rural furniture, reinterpreting these influences through carefully proportioned forms and sophisticated craftsmanship. Models from the series, including Skoga, Lovö, Utö, Sandhamn and Torö, are now regarded as some of the most important examples of Swedish Grace transitioning into Scandinavian Modern. Original examples of the Skoga sofa are exceptionally rare, particularly in their original finish.

Axel Einar Hjorth served as chief designer for Nordiska Kompaniet between 1927 and 1938 and remains one of Sweden’s most influential furniture designers. While internationally recognized for his elegant Swedish Grace interiors, his Sportstugemöbler collection has become especially sought after for its innovative fusion of rustic materials, modern proportions, and artisanal construction. Nordiska Kompaniet, founded in 1902, was Sweden’s leading department store and furniture producer, collaborating with many of the country’s foremost architects and designers to produce furniture of exceptional quality for both domestic and international markets.

This example is constructed entirely in stained pine with a deep brown patinated surface developed through age and use. The sofa displays substantial signs of outdoor exposure, including an extensively weathered surface, pronounced wear to the finish, surface scratches, abrasions, areas of fading, and a rich, uneven patina throughout. The visible cracking and oxidation of the finish are consistent with prolonged exposure to the elements while contributing to the object’s authentic character. The construction is stable, with the original joinery and structural components preserved.

Dimensions: 210 × 65 × 86.5 cm (82.7 × 25.6 × 34.1 in). Seat height: 45 cm (17.7 in).
