Information
Garden dining table produced in Sweden during the 1960s, featuring a rectangular grey limestone tabletop supported by a black lacquered tubular steel frame. The design reflects the functionalist tradition of Scandinavian modernism, combining natural stone with industrial materials and a restrained geometric construction. The designer and manufacturer remain unidentified.

The tabletop is made from grey limestone with straight edges and slightly softened corners. Its surface displays subtle variations in grey tones, together with small fossil inclusions, mineral deposits, and irregular natural markings characteristic of sedimentary limestone. The matte appearance of the stone contrasts with the dark metal structure beneath, creating a clear distinction between the horizontal surface and the supporting framework.

The base is constructed from slender, black lacquered tubular steel, with rounded bends connecting the horizontal supports to the vertical legs. Diagonal metal braces extend between the upper frame and the lower sections of the legs, forming triangular structural elements that provide lateral stability. The legs terminate in small circular metal feet. The open construction reduces the visual weight of the table while allowing the limestone surface to remain the dominant element.

The combination of stone and tubular steel reflects developments in Scandinavian furniture design during the mid-20th century, when designers increasingly explored industrial materials alongside traditional natural surfaces. Swedish furniture production during the 1950s and 1960s was influenced by earlier functionalist principles, emphasizing structural clarity, practical construction, and minimal ornamentation. Tables of this type were developed for domestic interiors, terraces, and garden environments, where durable materials and straightforward forms were particularly relevant.

The table is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age and use. The black lacquered steel frame shows areas of paint loss, scratches, and surface wear, particularly along the legs and lower sections. The limestone retains its natural fossil markings and surface variations, together with signs of use and a visible crack in the stone tabletop. These characteristics are consistent with the age and history of the piece.
