Information

This very rare floor lamp, model 2426, designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s, is a masterful embodiment of Frank’s distinctive design language—playful, elegant, and purposefully unorthodox. Created during a prolific period in Frank’s career, this lamp reflects his belief that interiors should be rich in atmosphere and warmth, achieved through thoughtful combinations of form, material, and color.

The lamp’s structure consists of a slender central stem in black lacquered metal, offering a visual grounding that contrasts sharply with the golden warmth of its three gracefully curved brass arms. This striking juxtaposition of matte black and polished brass is characteristic of Frank’s ability to blend opulence with modern restraint. Each of the three arms terminates in a fabric lampshade, original to the piece, which softly diffuses the light and enhances the lamp’s ambient glow. The multi-directional configuration of the arms allows for a layered illumination, creating a cozy yet sculptural lighting effect.

Anchoring the piece is a brass tripod-style base—discreet in profile but visually cohesive with the upper arms. The base provides excellent stability while reinforcing the lamp’s light, organic silhouette. This combination of asymmetry and balance, present in many of Frank’s lighting designs, imparts a sense of natural rhythm that aligns with his broader design philosophy: interiors should mimic the variety and spontaneity found in nature.

Josef Frank (1885–1967), a central figure in the development of Swedish modernism, brought a cosmopolitan and humanistic sensibility to Scandinavian design. While much of the mid-century era was defined by functionalist minimalism, Frank favored warmth, color, and eclecticism, often incorporating elements drawn from Viennese Secessionist traditions and vernacular design. His work with Svenskt Tenn, beginning in the 1930s, produced some of the most celebrated interiors and furnishings of the era, including textile patterns, furniture, and lighting that remain iconic today.

Measuring 157 cm in height and 57 cm in diameter (61.8 x 22.4 inches), the model 2426 lamp has a tall, elegant profile that makes it a fitting statement piece for both intimate and expansive interiors. It remains in good vintage condition, with signs of age including minor surface wear and patina on the brass, which enhance the authenticity of the piece. The original shades retain their form and integrity, offering soft illumination that is both functional and atmospheric.

The lamp is fully functional with standard E27 bulb compatibility, making it suitable for contemporary use without compromising its historic integrity.

As a lighting object, model 2426 is not only a beautiful example of Josef Frank’s design ethos but also a rare and highly collectible artifact of mid-century Swedish design. It offers a unique combination of visual delicacy, structural clarity, and emotional warmth—hallmarks of Frank’s enduring legacy.
