Information

This is a rare model MP-091 easy chair designed by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer and produced by Lafer MP in Brazil during the 1960s. The chair is a notable example of Brazilian mid-century modernism, characterized by an emphasis on comfort, material richness, and inventive structural solutions. The design features a suspended seat structure with a slung leather shell, supported by a solid rosewood frame, which reflects Lafer’s interest in tension-based seating and soft construction.

The frame is composed of dark-stained rosewood, formed into a rectilinear base with squared legs and horizontal stretchers. The leather seat is deep and enveloping, constructed from a single piece of generously padded black leather that forms the arms, backrest, and seat. The leather displays a natural patina with visible creases and aging, contributing to the chair’s authenticity and tactile character. The seat is attached to the frame using a set of natural leather support straps at the underside and rear, secured with wooden toggles and exposed hardware. These details exemplify the designer’s attention to craftsmanship and structural articulation.

Percival Lafer, born in 1936, is one of the key figures in Brazilian furniture design and known for merging modernist principles with the tactile warmth of Brazilian hardwoods and leathers. He often explored modularity, ergonomic support, and luxurious materials in his furniture. Lafer’s work is especially recognized for blending international mid-century aesthetics with local traditions and resources. The MP-series chairs and sofas, including model MP-091, are among his most iconic works, with a distinctive look that emphasizes suspended cushioning and visible frame construction.

The piece remains in good vintage condition with consistent signs of use. The leather exhibits moderate wear and creasing, while the rosewood frame has some surface patina and minor wear consistent with age. The chair retains its full structural integrity and original straps.

The dimensions are 93 cm in width (36.6 inches), 83 cm in depth (32.7 inches), and 68 cm in height (26.8 inches), with a seat height of 38 cm (15 inches). This model is also available with a matching two-seater and three-seater sofa, forming a complete lounge set. The MP-091 chair reflects both the relaxed informality and material richness that define Brazilian design of the era, making it a standout object for collectors or interior settings that emphasize sculptural comfort.
