Karl-Erik Ekselius dining chairs
This is a rare set of two armchairs and six chairs designed by Karl-Erik Ekselius and produced by J.O. Carlsson (JOC) in Vetlanda, Sweden during the 1950s. The frames are constructed from solid oak with a warm, medium-toned finish that highlights the wood grain. The backrests feature hand-woven cane inserts, which contribute both to the lightness of the visual expression and to the tactile experience of the chairs. The seats are newly reupholstered in green Kvadrat wool fabric, offering a subtle contrast to the oak frames.
The design is rooted in Scandinavian modernism, characterized by its emphasis on functionalism, craftsmanship, and refined simplicity. The frames exhibit gently curved elements, tapered legs, and precise joinery. The armchairs feature sculptural armrests that integrate seamlessly with the angled back legs, demonstrating a high level of woodworking skill and attention to ergonomic detail.
Karl-Erik Ekselius was a prominent Swedish designer known for his restrained and elegant modernist furniture, often collaborating with JOC Vetlanda. His work was part of the broader Scandinavian design movement of the mid-20th century, which gained international recognition for its quality and timelessness. The set is in good vintage condition with signs of age and use. There is a consistent patina throughout, and some damage is visible in the cane backs, which is typical for chairs of this age. The structure remains solid and the upholstery is new.
Dimensions for the side chairs are 45 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 83 cm high (17.7 x 19.7 x 32.7 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches).
The armchairs measure 58 cm in width, 57 cm in depth, and 85 cm in height (22.8 x 22.4 x 33.5 inches), also with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches).
