Axel Einar Hjorth dining chairs
This very rare set of six dining chairs, model “Lovö” was designed by the distinguished Swedish designer Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by the prestigious Swedish furniture manufacturer Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in 1932. The chairs are a fine example of Scandinavian Functionalism, a design movement that emphasized simplicity, practicality, and clean lines. These chairs display an elegant and robust form, reflecting the design principles of the period.
Crafted from acid-stained and oiled pine, the chairs showcase the natural beauty of the wood, with the staining technique enhancing the grain and giving the wood a deep, rich color. The gently curved rectangular backrests are secured with distinctive wrought iron fittings, a hallmark of the artisanal craftsmanship for which Hjorth was known. These metal accents not only provide structural integrity but also add a subtle, industrial touch to the design. The seats have been carefully reupholstered in neutral-toned linen fabric, which complements the rustic aesthetic of the wood and ensures comfort during use.
Axel Einar Hjorth was recognized for his ability to combine luxury with simplicity, creating pieces that prioritized both form and function. His designs often showcased an honest use of materials and focused on creating furniture that was both practical and aesthetically pleasing. These chairs embody those qualities, standing as a testament to his skill in merging craftsmanship with design innovation.
The set remains in very good vintage condition, with only minor signs of age and use, consistent with their historical significance. These signs enhance the authenticity of the piece, affirming its age and the quality of its construction. The dimensions of each chair are 47.5 cm (18.7 inches) in width, 50 cm (19.7 inches) in depth, and 95 cm (37.4 inches) in height, with a seat height of 43.5 cm (17.1 inches).
