Information

This very rare ceramic vase, designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1967, stands as a prime example of Scandinavian modern ceramic design. The vase features a cylindrical body with a finely textured surface, adorned with raised, repeating geometric patterns that add visual interest and tactile appeal. The upper section of the vase transitions smoothly into a slightly flared neck, which leads to a narrow opening. The glaze is a deep brown, with tonal variations that lend the piece an organic, earthy character. The surface treatment of the vase contrasts a glossy finish on the raised texture with a matte effect in the recessed areas, enhancing the depth and complexity of the design.

Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was one of Sweden’s most celebrated ceramic designers, known for his inventive approach to form and texture. His work for Gustavsberg spanned a broad range of styles, from playful and whimsical sculptures to elegant and functional tableware. Lindberg was particularly innovative in his exploration of new glazing techniques and surface treatments, making his work highly recognizable and highly sought after by collectors. His designs often combined modernist sensibilities with an appreciation for craftsmanship, ensuring their continued relevance in both artistic and design communities.

Gustavsberg, founded in the early 19th century, became one of Sweden’s most renowned ceramic manufacturers. The company was known for its commitment to high-quality craftsmanship and its role in shaping Scandinavian modernism during the mid-20th century. Gustavsberg’s partnership with designers like Lindberg helped position the company as a leader in producing ceramics that blended artistic expression with industrial precision, establishing a strong legacy in modern design.

This vase remains in good vintage condition, with only minor signs of age-related wear. The glaze has retained its rich depth and tonal variations, and the sculptural detailing remains sharp and well-defined, reflecting the craftsmanship and design excellence for which Lindberg and Gustavsberg are known.

The dimensions of the vase are 11 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height (4.3 x 7.9 inches).
