Achille Castiglioni

Achille Castiglioni (1918–2002) was an Italian architect and industrial designer and one of the leading figures of post-war Italian design. Born in Milan, he studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, graduating in 1944. After the war, he joined the studio of his older brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, working across architecture, exhibition design and industrial design.

Biography

After Livio left the practice in 1952, Achille and Pier Giacomo worked closely together until Pier Giacomo’s death in 1968. Their work was strongly connected to the development of Italian industrial design, combining technical experimentation with an interest in ordinary objects, unconventional materials and simple construction. Castiglioni frequently began with familiar forms or existing components and transformed them through changes in context and function.

He collaborated with several important Italian manufacturers, most notably Flos, for which he created some of his best-known lighting designs. Among these are the Arco floor lamp, designed with Pier Giacomo in 1962, as well as Taccia, also from 1962, and later designs including Snoopy. His furniture and objects include the Mezzadro and Sella stools, both developed from found industrial components.

Alongside his design practice, Castiglioni taught for many years, first in Turin and later at the Politecnico di Milano. His approach to teaching reflected the curiosity and close observation of everyday life that also informed his own work.

Castiglioni received numerous distinctions during his career, including multiple Compasso d’Oro awards. His work is represented in major international museum collections, and in 1997 the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented a major retrospective devoted to his work. He died in Milan in 2002.
