Biography

Born in Denmark in 1933, Bent Møller Jepsen grew up in a family closely connected to furniture production. His father, Simon Terpager Jepsen, owned the furniture manufacturer Simo, later renamed Sitamo Møbler in 1959. Jepsen initially trained as an upholsterer, completing his apprenticeship in 1952 before studying furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1956. His education combined practical craftsmanship with a strong understanding of furniture construction and design.

Jepsen became closely involved in the family business, developing furniture characterized by unconventional wooden frameworks, exposed joinery and generously upholstered forms. Sitamo specialized in high-quality furniture produced in relatively small quantities, often using teak, rosewood and oak. His designs explored geometric and asymmetrical constructions, frequently contrasting angular wooden structures with soft, organic upholstery.

Among his best-known designs is the FN lounge chair, created between 1956 and 1959. Named after Forenede Nationer, the Danish name for the United Nations, the chair features a wide, wing-shaped backrest and outward-curving armrests. Other notable designs include the TV chair, the Viking collection from 1961 and the Medalie armchair. He also designed distinctive three-legged chairs and stools, demonstrating his interest in experimental construction and geometric forms.

In addition to his work for Sitamo, Jepsen collaborated with other Danish manufacturers, including Boltinge Stolefabrik. His furniture reflects a combination of technical knowledge, craftsmanship and unconventional design solutions. Today, his creations remain appreciated for their originality, distinctive proportions and contribution to Danish mid-century furniture design.
