Ernst Kühn
Ernst Kühn (1890–1948) was a Danish architect and furniture designer associated with high-quality cabinetmaking and interior design in Denmark during the early to mid-20th century. He is particularly known for his work with the furniture manufacturer Lysberg & Hansen, later Lysberg, Hansen & Therp, where he contributed to the development of refined interiors and furniture characterized by strong craftsmanship and careful material selection.
Biography
Ernst Johan Charles Kühn was born on November 8, 1890, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He trained as an architect and became active as a designer during the interwar period, working at a time when Danish furniture production was transitioning from traditional craftsmanship toward more modern design principles while maintaining a high standard of workmanship.
Kühn collaborated closely with Lysberg & Hansen and was involved in the design of furniture and interior fittings for both private and public environments. His work often focused on complete interior schemes, combining architectural planning with custom-made furnishings executed in high-quality materials. He also participated in major interior and reconstruction projects in Copenhagen, including work associated with Bellevue Strandhotel and Restaurant Wivex.
Ernst Kühn’s work represents the tradition of Danish cabinetmaking in the decades before the international breakthrough of Danish modern design. His furniture and interiors are valued for their craftsmanship, material quality, and their role in shaping early 20th-century Danish design culture.
