Gunnel Nyman
Gunnel Nyman (1909–1948) was a Finnish glass artist and designer, regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Finnish glass design. Her work is known for its refined sense of form, delicate material handling, and ability to combine clarity with poetic expression. Although her career was brief, she played an important role in renewing Finnish glass during the 1930s and 1940s, creating works that remain central to the history of Scandinavian modern design.
Biography
Gunnel Nyman was born Gunnel Anita Gustafsson in Turku, Finland, in 1909. She studied furniture design at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki, graduating in 1932. Her training gave her a broad foundation in design, and she went on to work across several fields, including furniture, lighting, and glass.
In 1933, Nyman won a competition arranged by Riihimäki glassworks, marking the beginning of her career as a glass designer. She later worked as a freelance designer for several Finnish glass factories, including Riihimäki, Karhula, Iittala, and Nuutajärvi. At the same time, she also designed furniture for Boman and lighting for companies such as Taito and Idman.
From 1942, Nyman served as artistic director at Nuutajärvi glassworks, where she developed some of her most important work. Her glass designs are characterized by precise form, sensitive proportions, and a deep understanding of the material’s optical qualities. She often worked with fluid shapes, soft curves, and decorative techniques that emphasized light, transparency, and surface.
Among her best-known designs are works such as Serpentiini, Calla, Helminauha, Aurinkopullo, and Pyörre, as well as her spiked-mould vases and glasses. These pieces show her ability to create objects that feel both controlled and organic, balancing technical skill with a strong artistic presence.
Nyman’s work helped define a new direction for Finnish glass, moving away from purely decorative traditions toward a more modern and expressive language. She is represented in collections including Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Museum of Modern Art. Today, Gunnel Nyman is remembered as one of Finland’s most important glass designers, valued for her originality, elegance, and lasting influence on Scandinavian glass art.
