Karl Yngve Håkansson
Karl Yngve Håkansson (1911–1993) was a Swedish furniture designer known for his experimental work with laminated and moulded wood during the 1940s. His designs explored the structural possibilities of bentwood, resulting in furniture with flowing forms that anticipated important developments in post-war Scandinavian design.
Biography
Håkansson worked during a period of considerable experimentation within Swedish furniture design, when designers and manufacturers were exploring new methods of shaping wood through lamination and industrial production. He became particularly associated with Väsby Möbel- & Inredningsfabrik in Upplands Väsby, where several of his best-known designs were produced.
During the 1940s, Håkansson developed a series of chairs and rocking chairs based on curved laminated wooden elements. Rather than relying on conventional straight frames and traditional joinery, these pieces used continuous bent sections to form both the supporting structure and the characteristic profile of the furniture.
Among his best-known works is the Lillsiesta children's rocking chair, designed in 1946. The small chair demonstrates his interest in form-pressed wood and continuous curves, with the frame, rockers and supporting elements integrated into a compact design. The model became one of the clearest examples of his experimentation with bentwood construction.
Håkansson also designed full-size rocking chairs during the period, combining laminated wooden frames with upholstered or woven seating. These works share the same emphasis on curved structural elements and demonstrate how techniques associated with industrial production could be applied to expressive furniture forms.
His work belongs to the broader development of Scandinavian furniture in the 1940s, when experimentation with plywood, lamination and moulding increasingly challenged traditional cabinetmaking methods. Håkansson's furniture is particularly notable for the prominent role given to the construction itself: the curved wooden components function simultaneously as structure and as the defining visual element of the design.
