Biography

Torben Lind was born in Denmark in 1928. He established himself as an architect and furniture designer during a period when Danish design was gaining international recognition for its combination of craftsmanship, functionality and modern aesthetics. His work reflected an interest in practical construction, carefully considered proportions and furniture suited to contemporary living.

In the early 1960s, Lind began collaborating with fellow Danish designer Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen. Their partnership resulted in a range of furniture designs that combined traditional cabinetmaking with innovative approaches to form and construction. Together, they worked with manufacturers including PP Møbler and France & Søn, developing seating characterized by clean lines, durable materials and an emphasis on comfort.

Among their best-known creations was the Skopa Chair, developed for IKEA in the early 1970s. Made from moulded plastic, the chair represented a departure from traditional wooden furniture and demonstrated the designers' interest in industrial materials and production methods. Its distinctive rounded shell, generous proportions and curved backrest created a comfortable, sculptural form that reflected the experimental spirit of Scandinavian design during the period.

Alongside their work with plastic, Lind and Gjerløv-Knudsen designed furniture using traditional materials such as teak and other hardwoods. Their seating designs frequently incorporated carefully shaped frames, balanced proportions and practical construction methods. Their work reflected the functionalist principles of Danish modernism while exploring new possibilities for furniture production.
