Torsten Johansson
Torsten Johansson (1920–2004) was a Scandinavian designer and sculptor whose work bridges furniture design and object-making. His practice is defined by a clear understanding of structure and material, often exploring how form can emerge directly from construction. Working within the context of mid-century modernism, Johansson developed a restrained yet expressive language, where geometric clarity and organic sensibility are held in careful balance.
Biography
Johansson worked closely with the Swedish manufacturer AB Formträ, a company known for its expertise in bent and laminated wood construction. Through this collaboration, he developed designs that explored lightweight yet durable structures, combining technical innovation with an organic design language.
Alongside his sculptural practice, Johansson created furniture and functional objects characterized by clean lines and structural clarity. He is particularly associated with the “Honeycomb” wine rack, reflecting his interest in modular systems and geometric repetition.
His work demonstrates a balance between artistic expression and practical function, aligning with broader mid-century Scandinavian ideals while maintaining a distinct focus on construction and material efficiency.
