William Watting (1900–1973) was an American-born furniture designer associated with modern furniture design in both the United States and Scandinavia. He is known for designs that combine functional clarity, light proportions, and modern construction, often using materials such as plywood, teak, walnut, and other woods. His work reflects the international character of mid-century design, moving between American modernism and the refined furniture traditions of Denmark.

Biography

William Watting was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1900. He began his career as an architect and is described in several sources as having worked in the office of Walter Gropius during the late 1920s. This early architectural background gave him a strong foundation in modernist principles, including simplicity, structure, and functional design.

Watting became known for his interest in plywood and modern furniture construction. His designs often used simple geometric forms, clean lines, and practical solutions suited to contemporary interiors. He worked as a freelance designer and produced furniture for both American and European manufacturers, including Heywood-Wakefield and A. Mikael Laursen.

In Scandinavia, Watting is particularly associated with A. Mikael Laursen in Denmark. One of his known designs is the model 85 shelving system, a modular wall unit produced during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The design reflects the Danish modern interest in flexible storage, light proportions, and well-crafted wooden construction.

Watting’s furniture often balanced practicality with a restrained modern expression. His work included storage furniture, tables, seating, and other interior pieces, where functional construction was combined with a clean and elegant visual language. This made his designs suitable for both domestic interiors and broader modern living environments.
