Information

This very rare and extensive wall-mounted bookcase was designed by Danish architect and designer Finn Juhl and produced by Bovirke in Denmark in 1956. The unit is composed of rosewood veneer panels and shelving elements, brass brackets, and one shelf in glass, forming a composition that is simultaneously functional and sculptural. It embodies the architectural elegance and material sophistication that characterizes Juhl’s work from the mid-century period.

The configuration consists of a large panel-mounted structure that integrates a series of modular horizontal shelves, storage compartments with sliding doors, and a low cabinet segment. The rosewood is highly figured, with prominent vertical grain patterns in deep reddish-brown tones interspersed with black veining. The sheen and coloration of the rosewood panels give the structure a unified visual depth, acting as a backdrop for the lighter elements.

Shelves are mounted on finely tapered brass brackets, some open-framed and others solid, lending both visual lightness and mechanical support. A single clear glass shelf provides additional contrast in texture and material, emphasizing the transparency and flexibility of the modular arrangement. The cabinet sections incorporate discreet sliding doors and refined joinery, with the emphasis placed on function and subtle detail rather than overt ornament.

Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was a leading figure in the Danish modern movement and is credited with introducing a more expressive and organic form vocabulary to furniture design. Trained as an architect, Juhl approached furniture with a spatial and sculptural sensibility. His collaboration with Bovirke during the 1940s and 1950s produced many iconic designs that emphasized floating forms, advanced wood joinery, and bold combinations of material. The modular shelving systems he designed were among the earliest of their kind and represent a move toward architectural furniture meant to define and organize space rather than simply furnish it.

The piece is in good vintage condition, retaining original components and showing only minor signs of age such as surface patina and light marks to the brass and wood, consistent with respectful use. It has not been overly restored, preserving its historical integrity while remaining structurally sound.
