Erik Ole Jørgensen easy chair
This rare easy chair was designed by Erik Ole Jørgensen and produced by Georg Jørgensen & Søn in Denmark during the 1960s. It exemplifies the robust, straightforward qualities of Danish mid-century modern design, emphasizing honest materials and structural clarity. The frame is made from solid oak with square-section legs that extend beyond the seat to form the armrests and support. The wood is finished naturally with a matte surface that highlights the tactile grain and architectural character of the oak.
The seat and backrest are upholstered in the original saddle leather, presented in a deep cognac brown tone that has developed a rich patina and natural creasing consistent with age and use. The thick, supple leather is suspended over the oak frame, attached with visible tabs and stitching. Cushions are generously filled and loosely fitted, contributing to a relaxed and informal look. The leather panels extend to form the armrests and backrest, merging structure and upholstery into a single material gesture, characteristic of Jørgensen’s designs.
Erik Ole Jørgensen (1925–2002) was known for functional, material-focused furniture combining solid wood structures with high-quality upholstery or leather. His work is noted for restrained elegance and an appreciation for material aging, evident in this chair.
The chair is in good vintage condition, with visible wear on the leather, including creases and minor surface marks but no structural damage. The oak frame remains solid and stable with minimal wear.
Dimensions are 80 cm wide (31.5 inches), 71 cm deep (28 inches), and 65 cm high (25.6 inches), with a seat height of 38 cm (15 inches). This piece represents the rugged and tactile side of Danish modernism, offering a strong visual presence grounded in material authenticity.
