Information

This rare three-legged easy chair was designed by Bent Møller Jepsen in 1961 and produced by Sitamo Møbler in Denmark. It stands as a sculptural and highly distinctive example of early 1960s Danish modernism, noted for its formal reduction, unique geometries, and precise material use.

The frame is crafted from solid teak, displaying a warm reddish-brown tone with visible straight grain and natural texture. Its three-legged configuration includes two vertical front legs supporting the armrests and a single rear leg, reinforced by an angular stretcher system that also anchors the backrest. This creates a dynamic, architectural silhouette, uncommon among Scandinavian easy chairs of the period.

The backrest and seat consist of circular padded elements upholstered in original brown leather. The leather exhibits a uniform patina with subtle creasing and natural aging, indicating careful use. Both cushions retain their original shape and firmness. The armrests are small, flat round discs, echoing the circular upholstery motif and adding a sculptural balance to the otherwise rectilinear frame. The backrest is attached to the rear leg with exposed wooden brackets and screws, emphasizing the piece’s handcrafted quality.

Bent Møller Jepsen, active as an architect and designer during a period of increasing formal experimentation in Scandinavian design, produced work reflecting a deep engagement with the structural and aesthetic aspects of modern furniture. Sitamo Møbler, a Danish cabinetmaker, manufactured many of his inventive designs in limited runs. This chair represents one of the most sculpturally resolved examples and is rarely available on the market.

The design embodies the postwar Danish movement’s focus on architectural clarity, material honesty, and simplicity of form, while exploring innovative spatial and structural seating configurations.

Dimensions are 66 cm wide, 59 cm deep, and 80 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm (approximately 26 inches wide, 23.2 inches deep, 31.5 inches high, and 16.5 inches seat height).
