Console table
This rare console table was produced in Italy during the 1950s and is characterized by a minimalist, architectural aesthetic defined by its rectilinear geometry and use of refined materials. Although the designer remains unknown, the piece clearly reflects the influence of Italian mid-century modernism, particularly through its attention to proportion, material contrast, and an overall sense of spatial lightness.
The table is constructed with a hand-welded brass frame featuring a rectangular profile that encloses a single transparent glass top. The brass frame exhibits a patinated, textured surface with irregular directional brushwork and tonal variations ranging from gold and amber to oxidized brown. This patina results from natural oxidation over time and lends the frame a warm, aged character while maintaining a subtle metallic sheen. The patina is evenly developed across all sides, consistent with careful preservation and original material qualities.
The glass top is inset within the upper frame, slightly recessed with polished edges, and remains clear and unadorned. This transparent surface emphasizes the negative space within the table’s structure, contributing to its visual lightness and balancing the solidity of the brass frame. The construction features precise soldered joints and flush corners, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship typical of quality Italian production during this period.
The overall form is a pure horizontal rectangle supported by two planar vertical sides, creating a skeletal framework that prioritizes linearity and spatial clarity. The absence of ornamentation and the use of only brass and glass underscore the functionalist principles of mid-century design, while the expressive quality of the aged brass adds a sculptural and decorative dimension to the otherwise austere composition.
The console table is in very good vintage condition, showing surface patina and light signs of wear on the brass consistent with its age. The glass top is free from major chips or cracks, with only minor surface scratches attributable to normal use. The dimensions are 194 cm in width, 30 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 76.4 inches wide, 11.8 inches deep, and 27.6 inches high.
