Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen library table
This rare library table was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1951. Crafted from teak and beech, the table exemplifies the designers’ commitment to structural clarity and lightness, combined with precise woodworking techniques.
The tabletop features teak veneer with rounded corners and a softly beveled edge, providing a refined tactile quality. Its warm, even tone and linear grain are enhanced by a satin finish. The supporting frame is constructed from solid beech, stained to complement the teak surface. The legs are subtly tapered and connected by twin stretchers along the longer sides and single stretchers at the ends, offering both stability and visual rhythm.
A notable design element is the Y-shaped leg bracing detail, where a curved beech piece intersects the vertical supports just below the tabletop. This feature acts both as a decorative motif and structural reinforcement, embodying the designers’ focus on making construction an integral part of the aesthetic.
Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were influential Danish designers and architects who collaborated from the 1940s to the 1970s. Their work often combined architectural precision with expert craftsmanship, particularly in wood, and they were pioneers in developing modular and exportable furniture. This table is an early, representative example of their style, characterized by light proportions, gentle curves, and visible joinery.
Fritz Hansen, established in 1872, was a leading producer of modern Scandinavian furniture and worked with many renowned designers of the era. The quality of this table reflects the company’s dedication to precise joinery and high-quality materials.
The table is in very good vintage condition, showing light wear consistent with age and use. The finish is well-preserved and even, and the structure remains stable and sound.
