Gustav Axel Berg stool

Item number: 133119Category: Seating
Information

This rare early modernist stool was designed and produced by Gustav Axel Berg in Sweden during the 1930s. Constructed from laminated birch, it features four bentwood legs that curve inward at the top to support a gently contoured seat. The seat retains its original red leather upholstery, which shows a rich patina from age and use. The leather surface displays visible wear, including areas of cracking and loss, particularly along the edges, while the birch frame has developed a warm tone with signs of handling and time-related darkening.

The overall form is compact and organic, emphasizing ergonomic simplicity and an innovative application of bentwood techniques. The stool’s functional shape and minimal construction reflect early Scandinavian modernist design ideals, sharing clear affinities with the work of Alvar Aalto, whose designs Gustav Axel Berg actively promoted in his Stockholm gallery during this period.

Gustav Axel Berg (1901–1984) was a pioneering Swedish designer and manufacturer known for introducing ergonomic and functionalist furniture concepts into Swedish interiors. His company, Aktiebolaget G.A. Berg, based in Stockholm, collaborated with and distributed works by prominent European designers. Berg’s own designs demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of human posture and progressive material use.

This stool is an early, well-documented example from Berg’s own production and carries the original metal manufacturer’s tag marked “Aktiebolaget G.A. Berg, Stockholm” on the underside of the seat.

The dimensions are 35 centimeters wide, 34.5 centimeters deep, and 44 centimeters high (approximately 13.8 by 13.6 by 17.3 inches).
