Information

This very rare sofa, model V11, was designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Holger Christiansen in Denmark during the 1960s. The piece exemplifies Wikkelsø’s modernist approach, blending comfort with sculptural clarity and a meticulous attention to proportion and materials. Constructed with a rosewood base and original black leather upholstery, this sofa stands as a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century seating design.

The V11 model features a low, linear profile with subtly tapered sides and a gently reclined backrest, creating an inviting yet architecturally defined form. The seat consists of three generously padded cushions upholstered in black leather that has developed a natural patina over time. The armrests are softly curved and integrated seamlessly into the overall form, emphasizing a continuous, unified silhouette. The sofa is elevated by four sharply tapered rosewood legs, set at a slight angle for both stability and aesthetic dynamism. The rosewood is deeply grained and exhibits tonal variation, ranging from dark brown to reddish hues, creating a beautiful contrast with the leather upholstery.

Illum Wikkelsø was part of a generation of Danish designers emerging in the postwar period, focusing on functional, organic designs informed by both craftsmanship and modern production techniques. His furniture emphasizes ergonomics and sculptural form, and many of his seating designs have become iconic for their comfort and enduring elegance. Holger Christiansen, the manufacturer, was known for producing high-quality modern furniture, frequently collaborating with progressive Danish designers like Wikkelsø.

This example remains in good vintage condition with visible wear to the leather cushions, including surface creasing and fading, consistent with age and use. The leather retains its suppleness and integrity, while the rosewood frame remains stable and exhibits a well-preserved finish.

The dimensions of the sofa are 230 cm in width, 81 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, with a seat height of 41 cm. These measurements convert to approximately 90.6 inches wide, 31.9 inches deep, 28 inches high, and a seat height of 16.1 inches.
