Information

This rare pair of easy chairs, model 3320 known as the Swan chair, was designed by Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark during the 1970s. The design stands as a hallmark of Scandinavian modernism, embodying Jacobsen’s dedication to organic form, innovative construction techniques, and functional elegance.

The chairs feature a sculptural seat shell designed to provide ergonomic support while maintaining a fluid, continuous silhouette. The curved backrest and integrated armrests envelop the user in a comfortable, supportive form. Upholstered in dark brown leather, the material has developed a rich patina over time, enhancing its depth and character. The edges of the seat reveal glimpses of the underlying shell, offering a subtle contrast that adds to the design’s layered aesthetic.

Each chair is mounted on a cast aluminum base with a four-star configuration, ensuring stability and smooth swivel functionality. The combination of aluminum and leather highlights the mid-century commitment to using high-quality materials paired with precise craftsmanship.

Arne Jacobsen, one of Denmark’s most influential architects and designers, originally created the Swan chair in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. It was designed alongside the Egg chair as part of a comprehensive modernist vision for the hotel’s interiors. The chair’s revolutionary molded shell construction eliminated the need for traditional inner supports, resulting in a seamless and elegant form.

Fritz Hansen, the Danish manufacturer, played a crucial role in producing Jacobsen’s iconic designs, known for their dedication to craftsmanship and modernist ideals.

Each chair measures 76 cm in width, 66 cm in depth, and 81 cm in height (29.9 by 26 by 31.9 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). The pair is in very good condition, exhibiting wear consistent with age and use on the leather upholstery.
