Information

This very rare coffee table, designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Bovirke in Denmark, is a quintessential example of Danish mid-century modern design. With its organic form, refined detailing, and practical dual-tiered structure, the table showcases Vodder’s skill in merging sculptural aesthetics with functional furniture design.

The tabletop is formed in a distinct kidney-shaped contour, an iconic motif in mid-century organic design. The edge is subtly raised, offering a gentle boundary that not only adds visual interest but also serves a functional purpose in containing objects placed on the surface. The organic curvature of the table allows it to fit naturally into both rectilinear and flowing interior layouts, emphasizing a human-centered, adaptable approach to living spaces.

Beneath the main surface is a secondary shelf, also shaped in a matching organic form, but slightly smaller and recessed. This shelf provides discreet storage or display space and adds visual layering, contributing to the overall dynamism of the piece. The relationship between the two tiers emphasizes spatial rhythm and balance, hallmark traits of Vodder’s design vocabulary.

The table stands on four slender, tapered legs, which are slightly splayed for stability. These are joined by low horizontal stretchers that reinforce the frame while preserving a clean, open visual profile. The joinery and construction details reflect the high-quality standards of Bovirke, a firm known for its precision craftsmanship and close collaborations with some of Denmark’s leading designers of the 1950s and 60s.

The wood appears to be teak or a similar hardwood, with a warm tone that has aged gracefully. The surface displays light wear consistent with age and careful use, including small marks or subtle color variation, all of which add to the table’s authentic vintage character without detracting from its aesthetic presence.

Arne Vodder (1926–2009), a trained architect and protégé of Finn Juhl, became one of the leading figures in postwar Danish design. His work is characterized by an emphasis on organic form, subtle detailing, and a preference for natural materials. This coffee table reflects those values, combining elegant simplicity with functionality.

The dimensions of the table are 97 cm in length, 76 cm in width, and 55 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 38.2 inches long, 29.9 inches wide, and 21.7 inches high.
