Information

This is a rare three-seat sofa, model ML-90, designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Michael Laursen in Denmark during the 1960s. The structure features a robust solid oak base expressed through distinctive X-shaped legs, which are sculptural and angled, giving the piece a visually dynamic and grounded presence. The wooden base has a medium brown tone with a natural finish, harmonizing with the darker tones of the upholstery.

The sofa is upholstered in its original two-tone woven wool fabric. The seat cushions are in a light grey-beige shade, while the integrated backrest and arm panels are covered in a darker charcoal grey. The backrest, arms, and base structure form a single continuous shell with sharply inclined sides and a slightly reclined back, reinforcing the angular, geometric expression that characterizes much of Wikkelsø’s work. The upholstery is well preserved with only minor signs of wear, consistent with its vintage nature and reflective of careful use over time.

Illum Wikkelsø was a Danish designer active in the mid-20th century who worked in the tradition of Danish modernism but often explored more expressive forms. Known for his deep focus on ergonomics and form, Wikkelsø’s work balances sculptural aesthetics with high functionality. His pieces often feature organic curves or bold architectural shapes, as exemplified by the ML-90. Michael Laursen, a Danish producer with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, manufactured several of Wikkelsø’s more distinctive models, often in small production runs, making surviving examples relatively rare.

The ML-90 belongs to the mid-century Scandinavian design movement, notable for its merging of sculptural form with everyday utility. The design reflects the period’s innovative use of angles and volumes while remaining practical and inviting.

The dimensions of the sofa are 210 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, with a seat height of 40 cm. These correspond approximately to 82.7 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, and 28 inches high, with a seat height of 15.7 inches.
