Information

This very rare coffee table was designed by Frode Holm and produced by Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen during the 1940s. The table features a rectangular top in beautifully grained teak with warm reddish-brown tones and a finely detailed edge framed in brass. The slender brass legs are joined by cross-bracing, providing both structural stability and a refined, minimal silhouette. The combination of teak and brass exemplifies the sophisticated material palette of Scandinavian modernism in the early postwar period.

The brass frame has developed a natural, even patina, showing subtle signs of oxidation and wear consistent with age, which adds depth and character to the piece. The teak surface is well preserved, with light surface marks and a soft sheen from use over time. The table’s proportions are carefully balanced, with a thin profile that emphasizes elegance and lightness while maintaining functional sturdiness.

Frode Holm was a Danish designer associated with the promotion of high-quality Danish furniture and interiors during the mid-20th century. Illums Bolighus, a renowned Copenhagen department store and furniture producer, was instrumental in popularizing Danish design globally by offering curated collections from leading designers and architects. This table is a fine example of their collaborative approach to refined modern living.

This piece embodies the Scandinavian modern ethos with its emphasis on simplicity, quality materials, and understated elegance. It was likely intended for use in living rooms as a centerpiece that harmonized with other light, modern furniture typical of the 1940s Danish interior.

Dimensions: 112 cm width × 41 cm depth × 43 cm height (approximately 44.1 × 16.1 × 16.9 inches).
