Poul Kjærholm armchair
The PK-11 armchair, designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1957 and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark, is a notable example of Kjærholm’s innovative approach to furniture design. This chair illustrates his characteristic blending of industrial materials with traditional craftsmanship, resulting in a refined and sculptural form. The frame is composed of three brushed steel legs that create a balanced and stable structure, interconnected by a crossbar and a vertical brace for additional reinforcement. The steel features a raw, unpolished finish that naturally develops a patina over time, emphasizing the material’s authentic qualities.
The backrest is made from solid ash wood, carefully laminated and joined at the corners to showcase precision joinery. The warm grain of the ash contrasts with the cool steel frame, adding tactile richness and visual warmth to the composition. The seat consists of a concave, molded leather cushion in a deep brown tone, which retains its original patina. The leather is stretched taut over a rigid form, offering ergonomic support while contributing to the chair’s elegant and lightweight appearance.
The PK-11 reflects Kjærholm’s transition from strict functionalism toward a more sculptural and expressive design language. While maintaining the clean geometry typical of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, the chair experiments with materials and form to achieve a harmonious balance between industrial precision and organic softness. Kjærholm’s dedication to steel as a primary structural element is complemented by the natural warmth of wood and leather, underscoring his unique design philosophy.
Measuring 63 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 65 cm in height (24.8 x 17.7 x 25.6 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches), this PK-11 model remains a rare and highly regarded example of Kjærholm’s early work. The piece also highlights the meticulous craftsmanship of E. Kold Christensen, Kjærholm’s first manufacturer before production moved to Fritz Hansen.
